26th July 2011 - Planning Scheme Approved

The Grangegorman Development Agency is delighted to announce that last night Dublin City Council elected members voted to adopt the Planning Scheme for the Grangegorman Site.

This is another fantastic milestone for the project and brings over 4,500 construction jobs alone one step closer. It comes in the wake of a contractor being appointed to build the Mental Health Replacement Facility recently.

Once the Mental Health Replacement Facility is complete in 2012 this will open up the site to allow construction on the new DIT campus, sports and recreational facilities, public library, primary school and parkland space for the community.

The adopted Planning Scheme with amendments agreed by members will be available for inspection in DCC from 3rd August. Also from today for the next four weeks anyone who made a submission on the scheme will be entitled to appeal the Council decision to An Bord Pleanala.

The Agency would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has had any involvement in the project up to this point and we cannot wait to reach the next big milestone. In the meantime there is a lot more to do.

The Sport and Recreation Service officially launched the ‘DIT Developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity’ Programme on Tuesday 29th March 2011 at the Dublin Institute of Technology. The DIT Sport and Recreation Service in partnership with Dublin City Council established the ‘DIT Developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity’ programme after receiving part-funding from the DIT Foundation Office in 2010. The programme aims to promote and encourage the involvement and higher integration of women in sport at all levels whether as a participant in sport and physical activity, a coach or official in sport, or developing women’s active leadership in student sports clubs or local community sports organisations. There are currently 6 DIT students and 8 members of the wider community participating in a wide range of workshops and modules designed to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to plan, organise and lead sport and physical activity sessions. The programme will conclude in the early summer 2011.

Niamh O’Callaghan, Sport and Recreation Officer and Programme Co-ordinator said that the ‘Developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity’ programme is an important addition to the activities of the Sports Service, as it will create a culture of participation and combat negative peer influences enabling women to become positive role models within the Institute and its wider community.
